An actor's daughter, she trained for the stage from early childhood, entering films at 14. She gained prominence in the 30s in films directed by Kenji Mizoguchi and later worked frequently for director Teinosuke Kinugasa, who was one of her six husbands. She played leads and later character roles in numerous Japanese productions and is best known in the Western world for her performances in such films as Hiroshima (1953), Throne of Blood (1957), The Lower Depths (1957), and Yojimbo (1961). She has also been prominent on the Japanese stage. Her daughter, Michiko Saga (b. Mar. 3, 1935), is also a film actress.
