Education: Occidental College (pre-med); USC (film); American Film Institute This rising director has worked in many mediums: TV, film, live action, animation, fiction, and documentary. The California native was making short films by the time he was ten years old; he spent his high school years journeying through Ceylon and Sri Lanka, where he made a film on an indigenous tribe. After an unhappy stint in medical school, Underwood returned to his true calling, taking film courses at USC. He honed his craft first by working as a cameraman and editor for a commercial company and later by serving as a staff director for Barr Films, making industrial and educational films. Underwood's first professionally-released film was the stop-action RECORDED LIVE (1977), made with screenwriters/producers Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson, who became long-time collaborators. He served as assistant director on the horror film TOURIST TRAP (1979) and associate-produced another in that genre, CRAWLSPACE (1986). Moving to TV, he directed the highly acclaimed animated children's special THE MOUSE AND THE MOTORCYCLE (for which he won a Peabody Award in 1986) and its sequel RUNAWAY RALPH (1988). Underwood returned to features with TREMORS (1990), a stylish comic homage to the horror films of the 1950s; the film was well received by critics, but couldn't find a market at the boxoffice. But his luck changed in a big way when he directed CITY SLICKERS (1991), an adventure comedy starring Billy Crystal and a score of baby-boomers trying to figure out life, love and cattle. The film grossed over $200 million worldwide and remains his biggest boxoffice hit. That year, Underwood formed Stampede Entertainment with Maddock, S.S. Wilson and producer Nancy Roberts. Underwood continued in the "relationship comedy" vein with HEART AND SOULS (1993), a ghost story starring Robert Downey, Jr. and Charles Grodin. His next outing, SPEECHLESS (1994), starred Geena Davis and Michael Keaton as political speechwriters who fall in love before discovering they worked for rival candidates; it met with critical and boxoffice indifference. De film van Ron Underwood moet het helemaal hebben van speciale effecten en toont een emotfonele-gorilla van bijna vijf meter die als een vernielzuchtige peuter een reservaat in Los Angeles verbouwt. Het begin laat Joe in zijn natuurlijk omgeving zien, een overweldigend gebergte in Hawaï dat voor Afrika moet doorgaan, waar hij wordt opgevoed door een jonge vrouw nadat met dubbel Bambi-effect van hen beide de moeders door stropers zijn vermoord. De lieftallige Charlize Theron is een nietig figuurtje als zij zich in de armen van de gorilla nestelt, een oerbeeld waar volwassenen niet meer van opkijken, maar dat kinderen niet onberoerd zal laten. De voortdurende jacht op Joe noopt hen te vertrekken naar beschermd terrein, samen met zooloog Bill Paxton, die een aardige prestatie levert als je in aanmerking neemt dat hij, net als Charlize Theron trouwens, de meeste tijd tegenover een ontbrekende tegenspeler staat, omdat Joe pas later door de computer werd toegevoegd.
