Van 1931-49 was Tawney hoogleraar aan de London School of Economics.

Hij was aanhanger van de Fabian Society en van 1928-44 voorzitter van de
Workers' Educational Association. Zijn Religion and the rise of capitalism (1926)
illustreert M. Webers opvatting over het verband tussen kapitalisme en m.n. calvinisme.
