Alessandro Varotari werd Padovanino genoemd naar zijn geboorte plaats, Padua.

Waarschijnlijk had hij zijn opleiding van Damiano Mazza, die een volgeling was van Titiaan.

Padovanino vestigde zich in Venetië in 1614, waar hij onder invloed kwam te staan van Titiaan’s werk Hij werd te Rome uitgenodigd om een kopie te maken van Titian's Bacchanals.

Hij keerde in 1620 terug naar Venetië.

The National Gallery, London Canvas, only the bottom third, to just below

the arm of the kneeling boy, appears to be original,

142.5 x 181.1 cm. No. 70,

Cornelia, a Roman matron and mother of the Gracchi, declared her sons to be her jewels

after a female friend boasted of the jewels she owned. (Valerius Maximus, De Factis).

The quality of the top portion suggests that it is no more than an old copy (possibly the original was damaged or destroyed). The lower portion could conceivably be by Padovanino.
