Trained at Chicago's Goodman School of Drama, he played minor roles on Broadway and appeared in TV commercials before establishing himself as a successful TV comedian on "The Danny Kaye Show." He later co-starred on "The Carol Burnett Show" and in 1977-78 became the star of his own TV program. In between television appearances he played light supporting roles in films.
