He showed an early interest and capability in art and he was placed to study with P. Hoffmann and Andreus Van der Koogh. He specialised in landscape painting and enjoyed a long and successful career. He exhibited regularly in Holland and many of his subjects were derived from his travels in the Ardennes and Bohemia. He died in Dordrecht in 1874.De Klerk's paintings can be seen in the Museum of Rouen and the Museum of Nijmegen.
