KARFIOL, Bernard
Amerikaans schilder (1886-1952)
* 6-5-1886, Boedapest - † (?)-9-1952, New York
He began his studies at fourteen years of age at the National Academy of Design in New York and then studied in Paris at the Academie Julian. He was one of the earliest and most creative exponents of the Modernist movement in America. He was among the first artists to become part of the permanent collections of the MOMA (l925) and the Whitney Museum (1931).
He successfully merged European Expressionism with the American tradition of straightforward realism. Karfiol is one of the best-known members of the Oquinquit Art Colony. The art critic Hamilton Easter Field noted "those familiar with Karfiol's work find in it a tenderness and intensity of feelings so rare in America that there seems to be no one with whom he can be compared." His works are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan, Corcoran, and Phillips Memorial Museum amongst others.
