Gedoopt in Rotterdam op 3-11-1619 - † 31-7-1693, Amsterdam

Leerling van Cornelis Saftleven en van H. Pot  te Haarlem. Verbleef tot ca. 1646 in Parijs, Frankrijk. Na een verblijf te Hoorn ca. 1654 te Amsterdam gevestigd. Afgezien van zijn vroege keuken- en schureninterieurs, schilderde hij later bij uitstek stillevens met kostbare voorwerpen, als gouden en zilveren vaatwerk, bokalen en Chjinees porselein. Zijn kleurengloed, stofuitdrukking en lichtval geven zijn  werk een voornaam en luisterrijk karakter. Later schilderde weelderige composities moet roemers, Venetiaans glaswerk en Ming-porseleinen schalen, meestal op een marmeren tafel.

Hij was een der beste stillevenschilders van zijn tijd.

A collection of exotic and opulent objects laid out on the table is here painted with great brilliance and depth of colour. A lobster, a drinking horn with its glittering mount of silver filigree work, crystal goblets, a lemon and a Turkish carpet are painted with such a fine attention to detail that Kalf creates the illusion that they are real and could be touched. Each object has been carefully placed so that the group forms a harmony of colour, shape and texture. The warm light enveloping the objects gives them a luxurious, jewel-like quality and their rarety, sumptuousness and extravagance reflect the refined tastes of Dutch seventeenth-century collectors, in a period when still- lifes were immensely popular. Kalf lived and worked mainly in Amsterdam. The deep, rich colours of the paintings of this still-life painter may have been influenced by the work of his  contemporary, Jan Vermeer.
