A veteran of the stage as an actor and a singer, he entered films with IMP in 1911 and for several years played leads in numerous productions, often opposite his wife, who was billed as Mrs. MacDonald. He later worked for other studios and directed a number of films, including LONESOME LUKE—SOCIAL GANGSTER , one of Harold Lloyd's earliest vehicles. MacDonald gradually moved from leads to supporting roles and by the early 20s had become established as a fine character actor. He figured prominently in many of John Ford's silents and later appeared in several of that director's talkies. In all he appeared in hundreds of films.
