In stock from her early teens, she reached Broadway in 1928 and Hollywood the following year. She began her screen career as a tough gangster's moll in Little Caesar and other crime dramas but is best remembered for the numerous light films of the 30s in which she was typecast as a cynical, wisecracking, man-chasing blonde, often as the best friend of Joan Blondell and later as a determined reporter in the Torchy Blane series. From the 50s she played a variety of character roles on television and on Broadway, as well as in films. She won an Emmy Award in 1963 as best supporting actress for her performance in a "Ben Casey" TV segment. Terminal lung cancer forced her to leave the Broadway cast of 40 Carats in 1969.
