On stage from age 12, he later toured vaudeville in an athletic act with his brother Dustin Farnum. He rose quickly to screen stardom with his very first film, The Spoilers (1914), one of the most spectacular productions of the early silent era. He subsequently starred in scores of films, commanding one of the highest salaries in Hollywood. In 1925, during the filming of A Man Who Fights Alone (1925) he was seriously injured and could play only minor parts till the end of the silent era. He later played character roles in sound films, often bits in remakes of films in which he had starred.
