Net als zijn grote voorbeelden, de eveneens corpulente en jong gestorven komieken John  Belushi en John Candy, werd Farley vooral bekend door het satirische televisieprogramma Saturday  Night Live.

Zijn bekendste creaties daar waren een neurotische  talkshow-gastheer, de politicus Newt Gingrich en de zangeres Mama  Cass. Na vijf jaar televisie wijdde Farley zich vanaf 1995 voornamelijk aan een filmcarrière. Zo speelde hij een onhandige autofabrikant Tommy Boy (1995) en een  veiligheidsbeambte in Wayne's World (1992) en Wayne's World 2 (1993).

De meeste van Farley's films zijn in Nederland niet uitgebracht, zoals Airheads, Coneheads, Black Sheep en Bevery Hills Ninja.

Hij werd dood aangetroffen in de flat van zijn broer.

Hij werd 33 jaar oud. De politie neemt aan dat Farley, die 130 kilo woog, aan een hartaanval is overleden.

A manic, rotund comedian, Farley describes himself as a "class clown" and "teacher's nightmare" who, along with theater studies at Milwaukee's Marquette University, trained under improvisation teacher Del Close (who had worked with John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, and Bill Murray). Close brought the oafish physical comic to the Main Stage at Second City, and for a while Farley toured with the group's national company. A stint at Second City's theater in Chicago, where many "Saturday Night Live" alumni had honed their comic instincts, led to an audition with "SNL" producer Lorne Michaels, and, in 1990, Farley joined the NBC comedy series where his idols had toiled.

Farley brought his no-holds-barred comic elan to such characterizations as the peripatetic, oft-divorced inspirational speaker Matt Foley and, in a role Farley admitted reflects his omnipresent nervousness and eagerness to please, the insecure talk show host of "The Chris Farley Show."

His high-octane physical comedy has also embellished such weighty impersonations as Mama Cass, Newt Gingrich, Jerry Garcia and Meatloaf. Farley also has done a dead-on take of Tom Arnold, and in fact has played Arnold's brother on two TV sitcoms, "The Jackie Thomas Show" (ABC, 1992) and "Tom" (CBS, 1994). Farley left "Saturday Night Live" in 1995.

Comparisons with the similarly zany and hefty Second City and/or "SNL" alumni Belushi and John Candy were common by this point, and Farley, like so many of that crowd, gradually parlayed his TV fame into feature film work, often based on "SNL." He played security guards in WAYNE'S WORLD (1992) and WAYNE'S WORLD 2 (1993) and the alien daughter's well-meaning boyfriend in CONEHEADS (1993). In 1995, Farley teamed up with fellow "SNL"-er David Spade in TOMMY BOY, in which Farley played a problem college student who tries to save his father's business. The following year, Farley and Spade repeated the formula in Penelope Spheeris' BLACK SHEEP, about a Billy Carter/Roger Clinton-like political relative and his handler.

Leuke komedie met de sterren van de televisieserie 'Saturday night live'. Tommy Callahan de derde (Chris Farley, de zwaar gezette komiek die vroeg aan zijn einde kwam) is een slome, simpele jongen die met de grootst mogelijke moeite de school heeft doorlopen. Daarnaast is hij ook de aangewezen opvolger van zijn vader Big Tom Callahan (Brian Dennehy) die een fabriek voor auto-onderdelen leidt. Als 'Big Tom' overlijdt moet 'Tommy boy' de boel overnemen tegen de wil van zijn hebberige stiefmoeder (Bo Derek) in. Zij wil zo snel mogelijk geld zien en de slechtlopende fabriek verkopen.

Humor uit de doos van Chris Farley. Farley kan vergeleken worden met zijn idool John Candy, een andere veel te dikke komiek. Beiden bedienen zich van een flauw soort onderbroekenhumor, waarbij Farley nog net iets verder gaat. Hij is degene die deze film nog wel grappig maakt, want de overige acteurs zijn weinig geïnspireerd. Farley speelt de jongere broer van een kandidaat voor de gouverneursverkiezingen (Tim Matheson). Deze vreest dat zijn politieke carrière zal lijden onder het onstuimige gedrag van zijn broertje, en laat hem daarom naar het platteland verbannen. Maar of dat helpt?
