Stocky, forceful character player with a prominent, graying mustache, a one-time Chicago detective who was cast in a supporting role in Michael Mann's slick thriller THIEF (1981). Farina's successful performance led to work in regional theater and appearances on a number of TV crime dramas. Often cast as either cops or gangsters, Farina gave up his former profession when Mann offered him a sizable part in the feature MANHUNTER (1986) and the lead role of Lt. Mike Torello in the TV series "Crime Story" (1986-88). Subsequent TV movies include THE CASE OF THE HILLSIDE STRANGLERS (1989) and PERFECT CRIMES (1991); feature roles include a memorable turn as vicious mafia boss Jimmy Serrano opposite Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin in MIDNIGHT RUN (1988)
