Begonnen als een club en radio pianist, schreef scores en liedjes voor vele films, vanaf het begin van het geluid tijdperk Hij won de Acedemy Awards voor het lied “Secret Love” in de film Calamity Jane (1953) en voor de titel song “Love is a many splended thing’
