Nederlands schilder van bijbelse en mythologische taferelen en van portretten, was werkzaam in de Beemster, te Amsterdam (1652; na 1666) en te Leiden (1656 – 1658) De weinig oorspronkelijke stijl van zijn vroegere schilderijen wordt gekenmerkt door de invloed van Rembrandt en zijn school, Na 1654 ook door de lichtere, Delftse koloriet van zijn oudere broer Carel.

The birth of *John the Baptist had been prophesied to his father Zacharias by an angel. For his disbelief, Zacharias was temporarily struck dumb.

He is shown writing down that the child must be called John as the angel said, after which his speech was restored (Luke 1:59-63).

The woman with a halo is presumably intended to be the Virgin although the bible says she had left St Elizabeth's house before the birth.

66 x 61 cm St Joseph stands behind the Virgin who kneels by the Christ Child. The ox and ass are in the stall behind the manger.
