Zij maakte haar debuut als violiste op haar 14 jarige leeftijd in de Albert Hall. Zij kreeg haar eerste muziek onderwijs op de South Kensington National Training School, wat later uitgroeide tot het prestigieuse Royal College of Music..
Zij vervolgde haar studies in Leipzig en Berlijn, waar zij studente was van Joseph Joachim.
In 1894 had zij zich gevestigd te Birmingham als dirigente en en recitaliste. Zij huwde Alfred Ewart in 1898 en had 2 zonen bij hem.
In 1906 vertrok de familie naar Melbourne. Het daarop volgende jaar, leidde zij het eerste “Women’ s Work Exhibition, en won de eerste prijs voor de ode God Guide Australia. In de daarop volgende jaren ging ze vele malen naar Europa en verbleef erg lang in Milaan, waar zij samen met de componist Ottorino Respighi.
Bij haar overlijden liet ze een groot oeuvre na, omvattend o.a. 5 opera’ s een viool concert, een muzikaal gedicht, orgel eb strijk concert, ensemble stukken en meer dan veertig liederen.
