American Country Singer (1942- )

* 21.1.1942, Lubbock, Texas

Singer en songwriter Mac Davis began writing songs as a teenager and went on to become a successful country music songwriter .

Mac formed his own rock band in the early 19EIJ's but eventually turned to management, landing a job as Atlanta district manager of Vee-jay Records. In 19ffi he began working with Liberty records and ended up managing Metric Music, Liberty's music publishing division. With an extensive canon of original songs, Mac quickly drummed up interest in his songs and before long had two hit credits. Lou Rawls' release of 'Your're Good to Me' and Glen Campbell's single of 'Within My Memory'. By 1968 Davis had sold Elvis Presley's manager Colonel Tom Parker on his song writing abilities; within two years he provided Elvis with three hit songs. 'In the Ghetto', Memories' and ‘Don't Cry Daddy'.

During the same period other artists were putting Mac's songs on the charts. Bobby Goldsboro ('Watching Scotty Grow') and Kenny Rogers and The First Edition ('Something's Burning). But it wasn't until a few years later that Mac made a name for himself as a soloist. He signed a recording contract with Columbia Records and cut a debut album, Mac Davis: Song Painter, in 1971.

He promptly placed two singles on the country charts. 'Beginning to Feel the Pain' and the crossover hit 'I Believe in Music', both his own compositions The momentum carried into 1972, with his second album I believe in Music.

Later that year Mac scored his first Gold album, Baby, Don't Get Hooked on Me, with its Number One title track.

By the mid-1970s Mac recording career had begun to slow down as he devoted more and more time to TV appearances. He had a short-lived NBC variety show which later became a series of specials. He made his acting debut in the 1979 film North Dallas Forty with Nick Nolte, and had a leading role in the 1980 comedy, Cheaper to Keep Her.

In the early 1980's Mac refocused his energies on recording. He switched to the Casablanca label and scored his first Top Ten hit in years. 'It's Hard to Be Humble', which turned up as the title track of a Gold album later that year.

He also placed two singles in the Top Ten. 'Let's Keep It That Way' and 'Texas in My rear View Mirror'.

Most recently, he duetted and co-wrote with Dolly Parton on her White Limozeen album.
