Na lessen bij het ‘New England Conservatory of Music’, speelde hij in ensembles met de grote uit de jazz zoals Gene Krupa, Sammy Kaye and Bob Crosby. Later, als producent verbonden aan het ‘Joy and MGM labels’, kreeg hij vele No. 1 hits samen met Connie Francis.

Op een reisje naar Nashville, ontmoette Davis de producer/guitarist Chet Atkins en in 1965, werd hij Atkins' productien assistant. Niet lang daarna, kreef hij het idée om de stijl van Herb Alpert, Tijuana Brass sound over te nemen in een country-pop rhythm section. Het resultaat was ‘The Nashville Brass, die werd gevormd in 1968.

Davis & The Nashville Brass enjoyed a handful of modest chart instrumental records-"Wabash Cannonball," "Please Help Me, I'm Falling," "Night Life" and similar remakes of country standards-between 1970 and the mid- 1980's. Davis also won the Country Music Association's Instrumental Band of the Year award for six straight years ('69-'74), as wel, as a Grammy in 1969.

In the years since, he has continued to perform and record sporadically. #
