| He broke into films as a prop boy on James Cruze's THE COVERED WAGON (1923) while still in college, and later served as technical adviser on productions involving college backgrounds. Next he appeared in several films as an actor, including THE DUKE STEPS OUT (1929) and THE BISHOP MURDER CASE (1930) and began collaborating on original stories and screenplays, among them SHIPMATES (1931), DAMES (1934), FLIRTATION WALK (1934), THE PETRIFIED FOREST (1936), PROFESSOR BEWARE (1938), LOVE AFFAIR (1939), and YOU WERE NEVER LOVELIER (1942). As a director since 1943, for Warner Brothers and later Fox and other studios, he continued to write many of his own screenplays and still later also doubled as producer on some of his films. Daves was a meticulous craftsman and a showy stylist with a penchant for complicated crane shots. Although variable in thematic quality, his films were always interesting to watch and were often imbued with humanity and sympathetic understanding for characters in conflict with their environment. Especially effective were his Westerns, some of which show the influence of the period of his youth spent living among Hopi and Navajo Indians.# |
