In 1607 werd hij kamerheer van de koningin (Groom of the Privy Chamber). In 1615 was hij betrokken bij de oprichting van een schouwburg te Bristol.

Italiaanse invloed is waarneembaar in zijn Sonnets to Delia (1592), misschien zijn beste werk. In zijn verlangen naar een magnum opus schreef hij een saaie rijmkroniek: History of the Civil Wars between York and Lancaster (1595-1609). Beter is zijn Musophilus, or Defence of All Learning, een didactisch, strofisch gedicht in de vorm van een gesprek tussen Musophilus en Philocosmus.

In proza schreef hij A Defence of Ryme (1602), waarin hij, tegen Campion, betoogt, dat het Engels zich tot poëzie-in-rijm uitstekend leent, benevens A History of England (1612). Van zijn masques noemen wij Hymen's Triumph (1615).

Een voorbeeld van een van zijn vele gedichten:

C4RE-GHARMER SLEEP

Care-charmer Sleep, son of the sable Night,
Brother to Death, in silent darkness born:
Relieve my languish and restore the light;
With dark forgetting of my care, return,

And let the day be time enough to mourn
The shipwreck of my ill-adventured youth:
Let waking eyes suffice to wail their scorn
Without the torment of the night's untruth.

Cease dreams, the images of day desires,
To model forth the passions of the morrow;
Never let rising sun approve you liars,
To add more grief to aggravate my sorrow:
Still let me sleep, embracing clouds in vain,

And never wake to feel the day's disdain.
