Norwegian-American actress. Stage-struck in high school, she joined a local drama group and supported herself with part-time jobs as a lingerie buyer, junior copywriter, and model for various department stores.

She made it to Broadway in 1945, became the Rheingold beer girl of 1946, was signed to a contract by Warner Bros. in 1947, and moved on to MGM the following year. A ravishing redhead, she was one of the most beautiful and glamorous women that ever adorned the screen, and her Hollywood roles were more decorative than ambitious. Since 1959 she has appeared only occasionally in films but has been seen in stage productions from time to time. She has written a syndicated column as well as several books on feminine beauty care. Her successful Arlene Dahl Enterprises also markets lingerie and cosmetics.

The first two of her five husbands were Lex Barker (1951-52) and Fernando Lamas (1954-60).
