1994        KIKBOXER V – The redemption

Alleen geschikt voor de verstokte vechtfilmliefhebber. Je zou het niet zeggen, maar deze knokfilm is geregisseerd door een vrouw, Kristine Peterson, die daarmee bewijst dat ook een vrouw gewelddadige pulp kan maken. De Kickboxer heet Mark Dacascos. Vroeger was Matt kampioen, nu traint hij talentjes. Waar hebben we dat vaker gehoord? Waarschijnlijk in een van die films waarin het talentje vervolgens werd vermoord, zodat de trainer nog een keer de ring in moest. Want dat gebeurt hier namelijk

1995        CRYING FREEMAN

Bij actiefilms denk je niet meteen aan Canada, maar toch is dat het land waar deze film werd gemaakt. De plot doet enigszins denken aan de van ‘La femme Nikita’ Yo Freeman (Mark Dacascos) werkt aan een soort geheime dienst van China, en moet daarvoor regelmatig mensen vermoorden. Echt leuk vindt hij het niet, maar plicht is plicht. Bovendien bestaat er in Chin Chinese geheime diensten doorgaans weinig begrip voor morrende ondergeschikten. Tijdens een van zijn opdrachten wordt hij gadegeslagen door de knappe schilderes Emu O ‘Hara (Julia Conda). Dat betekent dat zij het volgende slachtoffer moet worden…

If you have seen one Martial arts caper you've pretty much seen them all, have you not? And despite director Lettich's vain attempt to sell us something different by glossing over familiar moves with some ridiculous combat form known as Capoeira, the novelty is you do it to Latin music, apparently -there's no escaping the wearisome, punch-drunk, good-guy, kicks-bad-guy's-butt routine being touted once more.

The man with the muscles is Louis Stevens (Dacascos, an unremittingly wooden would-be Van Damme), a disillusioned US Special Forces man and Capoeirista king who, at the film's outset, returns from Brazil to his home town of Miami ready to kick, maim, grunt and kill, all in the name of good form. And the villains in question are a bunch of dumb drug lords with pockmarks and dirty stubble to prove just how bad they really are.

In between are the school kids, rescued from the insidious influence of the drug-runners when the hero tutors them in his gung-ho, if-he-sneers-punch- his-lights-out, guide to life. The token love interest is Stacey Travis -so good in Hardware -who here is given little to do except fawn and look attractive for Dacascos' bland hunk.

The net-result is the kind of age-old crusty action-movie hokum that lost its ability to thrill somewhere in the mid- 70s. And no matter how many flowery fight sequences are mustered up from the director's imagination, this is no more then a dire collision between The Kids From Fame and some kickboxing D- movie.
