Genial, rotund, and sandy-haired character lead of American and Canadian films and TV since the 1970s, who specialized in broad comedy features and savvy TV parodies. Candy began as an actor in his native Canada, performing in a children's theater group. He moved on to satirical revues and started his long association with Dan Aykroyd. Candy's comedy career took off in 1972 when he joined Chicago's famed Second City comedy troupe, which then counted John Belushi, Shelley Long, Gilda Radner and Bill Murray among its members. Two years later, he co-founded its Canadian offshoot in Toronto with Radner, Joe Flaherty, Dan Aykroyd, Eugene Levy and Rosemary Radcliffe. Candy came to attention throughout North America as a performer and award-winning writer with the resulting "SCTV" in its successive incarnations as a syndicated, NBC, and Cinemax TV series.

Although he created many memorable and hilarious characters in countless sketches on "SCTV," Candy lacked the uncanny mimetic virtuosity of some of his co-stars. Nevertheless, his extremely likable personality and his reliable knack for eliciting laughs helped Candy emerge as one of the stars of the ensemble.

After appearing in several films with Second City alumni such as John Belushi and Bill Murray (Steven Spielberg's 1941, 1979; John Landis's THE BLUES BROTHERS, 1980; Ivan Reitman's STRIPES, 1981), Candy landed an inauspicious first feature lead in David Steinberg's raucous and tasteless Canadian comedy, GOING BERSERK (1983). He went on to provide sturdy comic support to Tom Hanks in SPLASH (1984) and to Richard Pryor in BREWSTER'S MILLIONS (1985) before landing a successful starring vehicle with SUMMER RENTAL (1985).

In the 1990s, Candy began to break out of his strictly comedic mold with more serious and dimensional roles, making a vivid cameo appearance in Oliver Stone's JFK (1991) and giving one of his most admired performances in the dramatic comedy ONLY THE LONELY (1991). He also brought low-key charm to his role as the underdog bobsledding coach in the hit comedy COOL RUNNINGS (1993) before his life was tragically cut short (at age 43) by a heart attack while Candy was filming the comedy WAGONS EAST in Mexico.

John Candy zou geen goeie komiek zijn als hij daar niet een grappige speelfilm over kan maken. In deze film treedt hij binnen in 'de wereld van de geüniformeerden' en maakt daar een aantal bokkensprongen die de nodige hilariteit opleveren. Candy komt uit Toronto, waar hij optrad in het inmens populaire televisie programma SCTV, dat helaas nooit in Nederland te zien is geweest.

Het talent is een generatie overgeslagen en Harry mag, in plaats van boeven te vangen, schoenen poetsen. Als Elliot Draison (Jeffrey Jones), een van de topdetectives van Crumb, vooreen snood plan een onnozele, incompetente detective nodig heeft, voor een ontvoeringzaak van een rijke miljoenairs dochter,wordt Harry alsnog van stal gehaald. Hij volgt alle verkeerde aanwijzingen op en gaat constant van onjuiste veronderstellingen uit. Dat komt de baas goed uit. Desondanks boekt hij toch vooruitgang in de hem toegewezen gijzelingszaak.

Heerlijke komedie over de waargebeurde lotgevallen van een Jamaicaans bobslee team. Hoewel geen van allen ooit een winterjas heeft gezien, of een vlokje sneeuw hebben gezien, laat staan ooit in de bobslee heeft gezeten, besluit een groepje Jamaicanen zich te kwalificeren voor de Olympische spelen. Een coach (John Candy) met ervaring, maar ook met een verleden, helpt ze hun droom te verwezenlijken. De Olympische gedachte ‘deelnemen is belangrijker dan winnen’ wordt door de vier nieuw leven ingeblazen.

Jammer voor de fans van de nog niet zo lang overleden John Candy, is de postume realease  van zijn laatste film slecht om eigelijk een slechte impact van de acteur weer te geven. But while this erratic tale is an improvement on the shoddy Wagons East (his final outing, released last March), it merely lerves as a footnote to his tragically Ihort career, leaving us to love him best for Planes Trains And A.utomobiles and Splash.

This first fictional film from Moore, director of the acclaimed documentary Roger And Me, is a madcap yarn based on the notion of America declaring war on Canada to boost arms sales. A bearded Candy plays Bud B. Boomer, sheriff of Niagara Falls, who patrols his territory with the tenacity of a pit bull and the intel1igence of an over- enthusiastic Labrador pup. The ensuing farce has just enough laughs to keep the action rol1ing along with an amusing bunch of characters played by the likes of Alan Alda, James Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, and Rhea Periman as Candy's rough-and-ready gun-toting deputy.

Americans, it seems, treat Canadians with the same reverence that the English hold for the Welsh, and thus many wearisome jokes are aimed at the Canucks (clean living, crap beer, Neil Young, etc.) and ultimately the film hovers only midway on the chuckle-ometer, carrled by the redoubtable comic skills of its leading man and the script's light, farcical spills. In all, this mildly pleasing effort is symptomatic of the great comedian's fluctuating career; he is really funny in an only sparingly amusing nd sadly rather for ettable movie.
