Education:     University of the South (Sewanee, Tennessee)

Grandson of a French ambassador to the US. He tried a variety of odd occupations before talking David O. Selznick into giving him a screen test when they met at a Hollywood party. Made film debut in 1932 and subsequently played numerous rugged-he-man roles, frequently in B pictures, occasionally as a heavy, most memorably as the hero who saved Fay Wray from the clutches of the ape in KING KONG. After WWII service as an intelligence and operations officer in Europe and Africa, he returned to Hollywood but spent much of the 50s working and living in Europe. He again returned to Hollywood in the 60s, in character roles. He died of cancer. Two of his three wives were actresses Adrienne Ames and Francesca de Scaffa.
