De critici ontdekten hem in 1956 te Cannes met Gili innamorati (1955).

Hij heeft vooral oog voor hei detail en verzorgt op de eerste plaats de vorm, wat vooral in  La viaccia (1961) (poster rechts onder) duidelijk aan het licht treedt.
