Hij studeerde aan de Académie Julian in Parijs, behaalde in 1889 zijn eerste succes met een affiche en besloot daarna definitief tot een kunstenaarsloopbaan. In Parijs sloot hij zich aan bij de Nabis en schilderde in de eerste jaren vooral Parijse straatscènes.

Na 1903 maakten deze plaats voor wat men later is gaan zien als typische Bonnard motieven: interieurs, veelal met vrouwen bezig aan hun toilet, en stillevens.

Nadat Bonnard in 1907 enkele reizen naar het buitenland had gemaakt, kwamen hier meer landschappen bij. Bonnard is wel de laatste impressionist genoemd (zie impressionisme), voornamelijk om zijn lichtbehandeling, waardoor hij alles in een iriserende atmosfeer wist te hullen. Zijn werkwijze was echter wezenlijk anders dan die van de impressionisten, die een indruk van een ogenblik weergaven, terwijl Bonnard soms jaren aan een compositie werkte en veranderde. Invloeden van anderen, o.a.Paul Gauguin, die hij zeer bewonderde, heeft hij echter altijd op volstrekt persoonlijke wijze verwerkt. Voor de kunsthandelaar Ambroise Vollard illustreerde Bonnard de gedichten van Paul Verlaine en later Daphnis et Chloé; in de maand voor zijn overlijden schilderde hij een groot fresco in de kerk te Assy (Haute Savoie). Werk van Bonnard bevindt zich in o.a. het Centre Pompidou te Parijs, de Tate Gallery in Londen, het Musée Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi, het Musée de Peinture et de Sculpture in Grenoble, de Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de Vence en het Musée de l'Annonciade in Saint-Tropez.
