* 27.10.1895, Greenville, TX - 1969

The son of a banker. He attended the University of Texas with the intention of studying medicine but became involved in theatrical activity on campus and decided on a stage career. After WWI service, which involved espionage activities in Germany, Bulgaria, and Turkey, he took voice lessons in New York and Paris and began a professional acting and singing career that culminated in the mid-20s on Broadway and in silent films. In Hollywood he rapidly developed into a popular romantic leading man. The demand for his services increased with the advent of sound, when his good looks were enhanced by his rich speaking and singing voice. Through the early 40s he kept busy playing a variety of leads in dramas, romantic comedies, and musical films.
