Hij studeerde te Berlijn, Kopenhagen, Oxford en Cambridge.

In 1933 emigreerde hij naar de VS, waar hij tot 1968 hoogleraar was te Princeton.
Hij leverde belangrijke bijdragen tot de harmonische analyse.

Hij schreef o.m. The role of mathematics in the rise of science (1966) en Eclosion and synthesis. Perspectives on the history of knowledge (1969).
