Hij studeerde medicijnen, maar liefst wilde hij aan het toneel. Later werd hij universiteitsassistent aan de universiteit van Wenen en Budapest.

Samen met A.V. Cornil schreef hij “The first treaty of bactology in the world “Les Bacteries”uitg. 1885 in Parijs.

Vanaf 1888 was hij professor te Boekarest aan de medische faculteit.

He conceived serotherapy, the transmission of immunity through the serum of immunized animals, especially regarding the virus of rabies.
